The theory of multiple intelligences

According to Howard Gardner, the eight multiple intelligences are combined and used in different degrees, in a personal and unique way, so that each person has their own intelligence profile. That is, they develop more easily and are more competent in some intellectual capacities and less in others.

Let’s see what each of the multiple intelligences defined by this author consists of:

  1. Linguistics : ability to use verbal and written language, demonstrating ease in learning languages, to achieve certain objectives using language and to understand the order and meaning of words in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
  2. Logical-mathematical : ability to use and represent numerical quantification systems, solve mathematical problems and analyze problems in a logical way.
  3. Naturalist : ability to observe, analyze, reflect and formulate ideas objectively, showing interest in the world and natural phenomena.
  4. Interpersonal : the ability to relate to other people and understand their intentions, motivations and desires.
  5. Intrapersonal : ability to know and understand oneself, using this information effectively in life.
  6. Musical : ability to compose, interpret, transform and value sounds, rhythms and music in general.
  7. Visuospatial : ability to visually represent spaces and images, recognize and manipulate planes, remember and devise mental images, and detect details in objects or photographs.
  8. Kinesthetic : the ability to use the body to express, to solve problems or to create products.

Promote multiple intelligences at home

To enhance, to some degree, each of the multiple intelligences, it is essential that children grow up in an enriching environment  in which they have various opportunities to develop each of the intellectual capacities previously discussed.

To achieve this goal, it is important that spaces for fun and entertainment are created in the home where children can practice different types of intelligence. Here are some recommendations.

Enhance linguistic intelligence

  • Reading.
  • Watching movies in original version.
  • Holding conversations in which active listening is practiced.
  • Playing games and hobbies to expand vocabulary ( word searches , crosswords, Passwords , T utti frutti , etc.).

    • Making cooking recipes.
    • Playing board games based on strategy as a family.

    • Carrying out science games and home experiments.

    Enhance interpersonal intelligence

    • Playing cooperative games with all members of the family.
    • Exposing yourself to new friends (in the neighborhood, at camps, at extracurricular activities, etc.).
