How to create confidence in students is a question that many teachers ask themselves, something that they ask themselves throughout their lives. Many know how to manage this issue, but others are still looking for the best way to do it.

Something that is always clear and is generally accepted is that a good teacher has among his qualities having achieved trust in his students. This confidence helps to achieve a climate capable of making learning easier.

Orient learning toward goals to build confidence in learners

By setting clear goals with your students — at the beginning of the school year or each lesson — the entire class will have a better understanding of individual and collective achievement. Seeking more goal-oriented learning,  make decisive statements about the learning goals of the day.

For example, you can start a lesson with a phrase like “today we are going to learn the first step of division,”  and end the class by saying something like “Congratulations! You are ready to teach at home that you are learning to divide ”.

Instill growth mindset

Fixed mindset

Students believe that their intelligence, abilities, and talents are fixed traits and cannot be changed. Students with a fixed mindset may not be interested in learning or trying to improve. They are sometimes embarrassed when they ‘struggle’ academically or find it difficult to learn new concepts.

Growth Mindset

Children with a Growth Mindset believe that they can improve through persistence and hard work. They know that they can develop their talents and abilities with effort and persistent attitude.

Although the details of pedagogy can be subtle, a common way to instill a growth mindset includes an action as simple as encouraging students to expand their responses in more detail or to use success binders.

Success folders to build student confidence

During the course of the quarter or course, students may have a difficult time remembering their progress and achievements. Success Portfolios address this problem by providing first-hand evidence of growth. How to create them?

Give each student a folder. On the cover they will write their personal concepts of success. Each day (or week), we will allow time for you to add personal learning examples to the portfolio. They can be summaries of the tasks they have done, explanations of the new concepts they have learned or tests and tasks they did well.

Before starting each week, each one will review their success portfolio. This encourages them to reflect positively on their achievements, gives them first-hand evidence of their growth, and serves to build confidence in students.

Reassure students verbally

Let us not get carried away by the infinity of pedagogical theories and theoretical advice, let us not forget, as teachers, something as simple as the great power of talking with students. Reassuring and verbally encouraging students to be confident in their abilities is essential.

There are, therefore, many ways to build confidence in students, and it is something we must not give up. The learning will thus be of a higher quality and the environment in the classrooms much more prone to teaching.
